There are restaurants where people dine in complete and utter darkness. The idea is that without sight, your other senses are heightened and the meal becomes a unique, sensual experience. There is no acclimating because there is no light whatsoever. You can select specific items or make a game of it and choose the mystery menu to guess what you’re eating. The servers are blind or visually impaired and they’re specially trained to guide you. The UK broadcaster, which owns Talpa, has tapped another of its companies, UK firm Twofour, to produce the series (6×60′) and will air it on ITV2.Dating in the Dark sees singletons looking for love take residence at a luxury mansion, with dates taking place in a pitch-black room.After this, each of them must decide whether they will go on a proper date with their chosen partner by going to the library, or whether they will leave the house and stand them up. Based on the Dutch programme Daten In het Donker, which translates as "Dating in the Dark".The third series of the programme tweaked the format slightly, by starting proceedings with eight individuals. Despite being stood up by his chosen date Dorianne De Pao, contestant Alan Warren would later team up with her to sing Rock Me Amadeus on an episode of Harry Hill's TV Burp.
Looks are taken out of the equation as the men and women get to know each other and form bonds in total darkness. And, to complete the picture, they also get a clue about each other outside the darkroom: photos of their homes, or being able to check out their luggage — anything that conveys information about the single.Over a series of meetings, the participants are given the opportunity to determine who their ideal partner is through various non-visual methods such as speech, smell, and compatibility tests.After this, each participant works with a sketch artist to create a drawing of his or her chosen partner, which is then passed to the person in question.For the first time, the participants see whom they’ve been dating. After they’ve finally seen each other in the light for the first time, they each have to make a difficult decision.
